Practicing for more than twenty years, Dr. Chernyk is a seasoned clinician having provided treatment in both outpatient and inpatient settings. Her specialties include the treatment of depression and anxiety, couples therapy, dealing with sexuality issues, crisis intervention, stress management and employee wellness. She has a special interest in women’s issues including, but not limited to post-partum depression and recovery from breast cancer. She is experienced in treating medical problems that have psychological components, providing independent psychological evaluations for worker's compensation and disability and in conducting pre-surgical psychological evaluation for gastric bypass surgery.
Dr. Chernyk practices in individual, couples, family and small group formats. She has practiced in both urban and rural settings. In addition to her writing and research on eating disorders and issues of sexual orientation, Dr. Chernyk has presented clinical and organizational seminars and has served as a behavioral health consultant and peer reviewer for regional and national health insurance companies. An expert on employee assistance issues (CEAP) and chemical dependency (LICDC), she is also qualified as a substance abuse professional (SAP)in order to conduct DOT evaluations. She has developed and implemented programs on stress management, coping with workplace conflict, supervisory training, dealing with downsizing and various other topics. Dr. Chernyk conducts critical incident stress debriefing (CISD) sessions and has provided consultation services to non-profit and for-profit business and industry.
Dr. Chernyk maintains allied health care privileges through the Cleveland Clinic - Meridia Hospital System. She is a member in good standing of the American Psychological Association, the Ohio Psychological Association, the American Society for the Advancement of Psychopharmacology (ASAP), the Employee Assistance Professionals Organization (EAPA) and is listed in the National Register of Health Care Professionals. She has previously served on the Board of Directors, Northeastern Ohio Chapter, Employee Assistance Professionals Association and on the Board of Directors for NAMI of Greater Cleveland.
Her approach to psychotherapy although eclectic, is evidence-based, and relies heavily upon cognitive behavioral principles. She has a reputation for being direct, practical and solution focused.
